InterNACHI How to Inspect Attic Ventilation and Interior Practice Test

In home inspection standards, inspectors are typically not required to check the mechanical ventilation system by activating thermostatically operated fans. This is because the primary role of an inspector is to assess the condition and functionality of visible and accessible components of a home, but not necessarily to engage or activate systems that are controlled by other factors, such as thermostats.

Mechanical ventilation systems may involve complex interactions between components, and there is a focus on observing their presence and condition rather than performing operational tests that could be influenced by various settings. By not being required to activate these systems, inspectors can avoid potential issues such as unintentional damage or triggering of alarms, thus maintaining a non-invasive inspection protocol.

The distinction is important in ensuring that inspectors follow guidelines that align with safety, practicality, and the scope of their responsibilities, which are to document and report on the state of home systems without needing to activate or interact with those systems directly.
